The pipe is vertical and the washer hose is fit down into the pipe and then secured. This will occasionally back up and then overflow despite the fact that the line is clear (snaked and draino'ed). I suspect that the pipe goes down about 3-4 feet and the makes a 90 degree turn. BTW, the washer company says that there is no way to get the washer to pump water out slower.
