Toilet sewage came through my basement wall

I live on a street of connected houses, each house sharing a wall. My house is about 9 inches lower than my neighbors. Both houses are 140 years old, with dirt floor basements. A toilet drain pipe which runs through his basement had been leaking for a month or more before we finally discovered the cause. ( A plumber poured bright yello dye down his toilet, and it came through our basement wall. Of course it damaged our property, but how do we clean up such a mess? What are the sanitation concerns?
