water hammer happens when there is a sudden velocity decrease (valve being shut) which causes an increase in the fluid pressure in the inelastic pipe (copper or gal) which causes shock waves. The vertical pipe allows for the increase of fluid pressure without the banging caused by the water hammer shock wave.
: It is vertical and is on the hot and cold water pipes. I have also seen this under kitchen sinks.
: How exactly does this stop water hammer?
