Unless it is leaking or deformed from overheating, you can usually use muriatic acid to unplug the coils. Your quoted price is about right since a new coil usually costs about one half or more the price of a new heater.

: I live in a hardwater area in the south of england, chalk built up in the heat exchanger of my series one pool boiler. after trying to drill it out it became apparent that it was beyond repair. I understand that it is possible (neccesary!) to use chemicals in the water to prevent it happening again, but i need to find a replacement for as little cost as possible. When it originally happened i was quoted 800. I managed to get the boiler direct from canada from a friend who emmigrated there, and so only paid 1500 for the whole set-up new, any ideas.
