Cement board will give you a smooth surface to start from, but it will conform to the old surface whether it is level or not.
: I am gutting my 32 year old bathroom and I don't know what we'll find underneath the old tile floor. My contractor said that if it's not too bad, they can patch up existing plywood floor before laying new tile. But he recommends adding cement board to level and resist water damage. Thoughts?
