Sewage Ejector Pump odors

We live in the Phoenix area and are looking to buy a different home. One we like a lot has a basement with 2 BRs, and full bath. It uses a sewage ejector pump. The pump has been replaced some months ago (warranty ran out end of Feb). The home inspection report says there is an odor coming from the pump. The owners followed up and contacted the company that replaced their pump to find out if there was a problem. They got a letter from the company (in early Feb, a few weeks before the warranty was to expire) stating, "To the best of our knowledge, there is no problem with the sump pump. It is the nature of a sump pump to have a slight odor from time to time."

IS THIS TRUE? As prospective buyers of this property we are concerned and want to be accurately informed. Thanks, Mike Blackstone
