Use of back up valve/damage

I own a home built in 1940 and during a hard rainfall (rained 2 hours straight without letting up) in August, the water came up through the basement drain and it flooded (about 7-12"). My dad keeps harping on me to fashion a PVC extension on the drain (say a foot or so) so it can't backup into the basement if we ever get a hard rain again. I will add that I spent 2-3 years to finish our basement and in talking to our neighbors, backups have occured in the past, but not often. Since our house was built in 1940 I am concerned that putting pressure on the old drain may cause it to burst under the concrete floor. Whether I use a pipe extension or some sort of back up valve, am I opening up myself for major problems? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
