You should install a trap, and if you use a trap then you need a vent. With a trap it becomes a closed system and unless there is a way for air displaced by the water to be evacuated, the water will not flow into the system.

: I plan to install a buried 55 gallon plastic drum drywell behind my detached garage. Water running from
: the trench drain inside the garage will carry the water to the drywell. This drywell will only be used for
: catching water from runoff when washing the car or truck. Will I need to vent the drywell and should
: I install a water trap to prevent odors or insects from entering back into the garage from the drywell?
: Thank you in advance. Stanley
