faucet noise

My bathroom faucet (an older 1950-ish two handled faucet) has increasingly begun to stick and make loud rattling noise when I try to use the cold water. It is hard to turn on, and it makes a noise loud enough to scare my kids away. When we bought the house a year ago this didn't happen, and I'm hoping I just have to learn how to maintain this old faucet. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Mark
