Bath Tub Drain - How Do You Remove It?

My bath tub drain has lived a good life and it is time for a replacement. However I cannot seem to remove the old tub drain. Any suggestions? I don't want to do anything that will destroy the tub or the drain hole.
Pure muscle does not seem to be enough.
