The only sign that a heater needs replacing is leakage. Everything else such as popping, gurling, etc. are signs of inefficiency but not necessarily replacement until they become intolerable. : What are other possible signs besides leakage of water on a water heater that needs replacing?? : Particularly on a older water heater that continues making gurgling sounds.
