I am not sure about your area, but everywhere I a familiar with would have had an external cleanout if the house was built in the '80's. You might put your enerry to work digging about 2-4 feet from the house above the point where the sewer is located. (I have seen the cleanouts installed 15' from the house in some cases, however.) : The discriptions I've seen of installing an external cleanout for a house seem easy enough to accomplish myself. I've had an estimate of ~$900 to do this installation from a plumber for a house built in 1980 that has "plastic" pipe. : Is there a description of the installation process or a write-up for the do-it-yourselfer that will discuss best practices for the job? I'm quite good at projects, especially if I can do the work for a fraction of the cost.
