Shower mixing valve (Kohler)

Request info on replacing Kohler mixing valve in shower. Are special tools needed? How is the unit removed, have a one piece shower stall and valve extends approx one inch into shower (after removal of dial) which would make getting a wrench on the mixing valve difficult without damaging the one-piece shower. Problem (guest shower) went unused for about a few months and seems gummed/corroded. Can force it open and it works but is difficult to pull in and out. Can it be lubricated? Don't really know how to correct the problem. Thanx - really.......
