burnt wire/menthol? smell whenever you use water from any source in the house

We have a problem whenever you turn on the water in the house. There is a burnt wire or menthol medication smell.This is the best description I can come up with. It seems that we are the only family that is experiencing this so it is an internal problem. The water also leaves a bad aftertaste. We don't think it's the water heater as the smell is not the "rotten egg" smell others have described. We are stumped! Please help! I have called the Wate Co that provides our water, they will get back to me. Who knows when that will be.
