: I just recently bought a house and sometimes in the middle of the night I hear the pipes banging in the middle of the night. The funny part is that the water has not been used for several hours. What can cause this and how do I fix it?

Ray,
two things to check. Either the toilets have slow leaking flappers, that cause a late night refill, or there may be a refilling icemaker tray in the kitchen. The solution for the toilet, would be to fix all leaks. The solution for the icemaker, would be to add a water hammer device to the water supply within five feet of the connection. Terry
