Hot water too hot !

Terry, i have a 30 gal. electric hot water heater that is turning out warer greater than 170 degrees ! The thermostat is set at about 120.... Is my best choice to replace the thermostat? We have a lot of calcium out here and the tanks seem to last about 5 years max. I flushed the tank with a full flow ball valve,,Not the factory installed spogot that came with the tank...But it still gets too hot ! Is there anything other than the thermostat that I need to check out? It seems to work now... but tomorrow ..Who Knows..It comes and goes.... Thanks, Rick
