: We are thinking of replacing our old 14" rough-in toilet with a one-piece 12". My understanding is that the only problem would be that it would be a couple of inches away from the wall, which doesn't seem like that much of a problem (We plan to get the Toto Ultramax).

That will work fine. The Toto Ultramax doesn't take up much space to begin with. If the space behind the toilet does not look right to you, you could install a shelf over the toilet.
