bath tub drain problems

in the past few weeks I have noticed that the bath tub in leaking water around the base of the drain in the floor of the tub. Also I am having problems in the overflow drain. the water is also leaking in that area. When I took the overflow cover off to look at it I noticed that the drain pipe was away from the tub. The pipe was loose, it was not joined to the tub in any way. Does this sort of thing happen often or do I have a serious problem on my hands.
