True enough, it wasn't the overflow drain - though it now has a new washer. The water is originating at the faucet. It seems to be entering around the face plate and building up on the shelf formed by the bottom of the cutout.
What I'm not sure about is whether there should be a seep hole to ley water out (back into the tub) at the bottom or whether the face plate needs to be sealed entirely? Which is correct?
