Walt, as a plumber for 40 years and an owner of a gas water, I recommend you stay with gas and simply turn down the water heater when not in use. I lowered my gas and electric bills from $297 a month to $99 dollars a month simply by reducing the temperature of my water heater when I was not home and turning off my forced air furnace at night and during the day when the home was not occupied.
