bathtub faucet

In a two story house, only when the upstairs bathtub faucet in turned on can I hear a drip from downstairs.
The dripping stops once I pull the diverter to activate the shower.

Is it the cartridge inside the faucet that needs to be replaced? If so, how? If not, any ideas as to the cause of the drip?

NOTE:
The faucet is a big fat knob and one must pull it to activate, then turn right or left to adjust the temperature. I do not know the brand. (probably cheap!)
