Backing (could be a 2x4) should be installed between the two studs to secure the top portion of the lav.
The main shut off may be near the water heater.

: I live in a townhome. I am trying to install a pedestal sink in my powder room. I want to take out the vanity that consists of cabinetry and a marble top & sink. Do I need to install a beam between 2 studs to anchor the sink? Also, the cold-water valve is very difficult to turn off. Where can I look for the main water supply to my townhome?
