There's probably a lip around the edge that is covered by the drywall and tile, hence making up the 1 1/2" difference (1/2" x 2 for drywall, 1/2" for total for tile and adhesive). This is what prevents water from leaking behind the wall of the tray.

: My shower tray is 30 x 30. It is walled on three sides so no chance of changing the size. I would like to replace it, but I am told the smallest now made is 32 x 32. (I have triple checked the distance between the two walls is 30.5") Do you know where I could find a tray that size? (What about showers made for mobile homes?)
