Sump Pump Plugging

In response to Sump Pump Plugging
I have a sump pump installed in the crawl space under my house to remove the standing ground water that collects around the foundation. When the sump system was installed, a hole was dug near the foundation, a bucket with approx. 1/4 inch holes punched in the sides, and the sump pump placed in the bucket. Although the water drains to the sump, it carries silt with it and plugs teh pump inlet preventing it from operating. What are some of the suggestions that can be implemented to insure that the pump will always operate? It's no fun crawling under my house to unplug the inlet so the pump will run when needed! Thanks in advance for any solutions to my problem.
