Leaking pipe

I have a leaking water main, probably 3.5-4 feet down. My problem is that I would like to fix the leak rather than pull in a new main. I know it will require some digging but my question is how do I find the right spot to dig. Is there some sonic tool that will pick up the leak by noise?
