bad odor from stand up shower

I have a problem in which there is a foul smell coming from my standup shower on the second floor of my home. I have had a vent smoke test done throughout the house by a plumbing company for vent leaks but found none. It has been suggested the water is probably evaporating from the P trap. But, usually when the bad odor occurs I can see there is water in the P trap. Pouring about half gallon of water in the drain eventually controls the odor. My home is 3 years old and this has been occuring since that time. thanks dxs6114@dcccd.edu DS
