locating water supply line

Before planting a tree, I need to locate the route taken by the water supply line. I know where the meter is, of course, and I know where the line into the house is. The line goes around a tall tree, but I don't know which side of the tree it goes on. The house was built in 1997 so I am assuming PCV lines, meaning a metal detector won't work. The builder doesn't recall. How can I trace the line? TIA
