As you suspect, there should be a vent (air gap)on the dishwasher line before the disposal. And yes, its absence can allow water from the disposal to drain backwards into your dishwasher.
If you can't install one, you might try putting a long drain hose on the dishwasher, long enough to route it up high, just under the counter, so that at least a portion of it is above the disposal before entering the side of the disposal. The best, and most sanitary/safe thing to do, however, is to install an air gap.
