If your heat tape is years old--remove it and remove it now! See teh article at http://www.safetydeck.com/nltr/safety18.htm to learn more about the safety hazards of old heat tape. Furthermore, you should cover heat tape with insulation--if you feel you must, make it fiberglass or some other fire resisitant insulation. : Any pros or cons on use of heat tape under crawl space? We had one put on which is thermostatically controlled, approximately 18 years ago. A friend told me he had his removed because of fire potential...tape gets old, cracks, gets damp, etc. I think mine has some insulations over the tape too. Does anyone have a comment on the safety of this? (PS - an electrician went under the crawl space last year at my request but said he couldn't tell the condition of the tape since it was covered with insulation.)
