Can't get shower knobs off old fixtures - 2nd Inquiry!!!

A women below asked the same question and you did provide the diagram but I am having the same
exact problem. After I take the screws out of the handles they don't come off. I am afraid to pull or tug too
hard and break them. Any suggestions????
