Ejector pump odor

We recently moved into a 50-year-old house. There's an ejector pump in the basement, and an odor comes from it in the morning. It dissipates usually after a few cycles. The pump is under the basement floor level and is covered by a piece of plywood and caulked into place. What can we do to stop the odor?
