Steve:---It is all but impossible to do any meaningful cleaning to a gas or electric water heater using the sorry drain cock at the base of the heater. To do a good job, you will need a 3/4"X 2" brass or galvanized nipple.... A 3/4" FIP full flow ball valve............
A 3/4" MIP X 3/4" Male hose thread adapter.

Shut the power or gas off and drain the water from the tank.

Unscrew the useless existing drain cock and throw it in the trash where it belongs.

Install the nipple valve and adapter (be sure to use pipe dope or teflon tape.)

Conect a garden hose (the larger the diameter the better) to the new hose fitting.

Open the new valve fully....

Open the valve that fills the water heater fully...

Let the water run wide open until no more junk comes out....

Turn the new valve off....

Disconnect the hose from the new valve...

WHEN THE TANK IS FULL...WHEN THE TANK IS FULL
Turn the Gas or power back on...your done.

Lots of luck...Bud Damage can be done to your heater is it is not completely filled with water before turning it back on....
