Hot water heater - drip tube

Hi, My question is I understand my drip tube broke off
inside my water heater. It works fine but makes horrible
sounds when cold water goes in. How hard is it to
replace and how would I go about replacing it? Would it
be a better idea to replace the Hot water heater? Thanks for your advice, Mary
