I had sewer gas smells coming from my toilet on hot summer days. I tried everything except replacing the fixture...replacing the wax ring, adjusting the clearance between flange and toilet, checking the vent stacks for obstructions...and the smell persisted. Finally I took the toilet apart and started inspecting some of the innards of the bowl using a dental mirror. I discovered a casting defect that left a small slit inside the opening through which the tank dumps water into the bowl....I sealed that slit with a high power silicone sealant and haven't had a smell since....
