Water can always be tested to be sure. Some old pipes are quite safe, but can add lot's of iron into your diet.
Private well systems are tested less than public water systems. Most public water systems are tested quite often. Lead seems to be the worst problem with old pipes.
I like to repipe older homes using combinations of copper and PEX piping. Clothes come out cleaner and the water tastes better. Lot's more flow in some cases. Terry
