If the stem turns continually without coming out, I would guess you have gone too far already. The housing that the stem screws into is what you should have removed, (at least in 90% of faucets), and the ones that are different are the ones that unscrewing the stem would remove it.

: I've gotten to the point where I can see the stem and the washer is slid out onto the shaft of the stem but I can't figure out how to remove the stem from inside the housing so that I can slip a new washer in place. All the turning in the world won't remove the stem from the wall housing.
