We shut the main water valve to the rest of the house. We attached a garden hose to the drain at the bottom of the cold water tank, opened up the spigot, and nothing happened. Then we took a coat hanger and broke through the sediment. We got an outrush of water and expected the tank to continue to drain, but nothing after that initial outrush. Do we have to pump air into the tank with a bicycle pump in order to get the water to drain out? I know we used a bicycle pump before to put some air into the tank AFTER we drained it, but we found out later that wasn't really necessary. Would much appreciate advice!

Rae Selina IS THAT YOU GIRL? Put a big washtub under the cold water tank spigot and take the top (packing nut) off the spigot and unscrew the valve stem and look inside to see if there is lots more poking of sediment you have to do. WATCH it though, OK? the entire water contents are gonna come out and flood you in the tub isn't big enough. The rusty sediment is iron oxide, lime, and deposits of calcium carbonate mixed. When you poked a hole in it, that allowed a bunch of water to flow out, but that also carried with it more of the sediment that plugged up your hole. Poke it again and again. The waterlogged condition is a result of oxygen poor pressureized water not allowing enough oxygen into the tank to prevent a vacuum from being formed as the water falls out such a tiny hole. When the sediment is pretty much out of the tank, try to push pressurized water back into the empty tank to rinse it out. then put the faucet spigot and valve back together and fill the tank. The last time you put air in the tank with the tire pump was to recharge the air bladder, but it wasn't necessary because the air bladder is inside the tank, but separated by a diaphragm. When you put new water into the tank, it will fill the tank with 89 percent water and 11 percent air (optimally)which will then push water pressure against the air bladder diaphragm and should then show 30 or 40 pounds per square inch on the air pressure gauge.
