sewage pump

I have an ejector pump in my basement that presently only ejects laundry water into the septic . Every time it pumps the water to the septic there seems to be an odor emiited from the sewage tank . It is vented and i have checked the seals. Is it drawning the odor from the vent pipe during an ejection of water? I thought the flap was to avoid any fumes from entering this chamber. What is the proper configuration ?Is this something that is common ?
