Yes, it can be shortened, however, I don't know by how much, one source says it should be at minimum of 12", another says this stub out should be a size larger ie., 1/2 pipe should have a 3/4 inch air cushion chamber, my local plumbing guys say it don't matter, I guess trial and error wouldn't hurt, basically you would cut the stub out shorter and solder on a new cap.
