I don't know about where you live but in the last three states I have lived in it is a misdemeanor to knowingly write a bad check punishable by fines up to $10,000 and/or jail time of up to 3 months. This activity is also known as check fraud. I'd be careful and deposit money soon, and call the plumber so he knows what is going on.
