I have several questions regarding water softners. I just bought a house with an older Imperial water softner. It is currently set-up to dump into the sump pump which is then dumped onto my lawn and kills everything in its path. Are there any consequences of dumping it into my laundry drain so that it goes out through the septic system instead?
Also, the water softner takes about 3 hours to regenerate itself. Is this normal?
Finally, the water develops a bad odor by the end of the second day in between cycles. It's a combination of a fishy smell and rotten eggs. After the softner regenerates itself the smell goes almost entirely away and then builds back up over the next 2 days. Any ideas on what is causing this?
