|In response to Re: hot water shortage only after a few days away|
: I have a gas water heater about three years old. If I don't use hot water for a few days while I'm away, when I return the quantity of hot water available is very low. Otherwise I always have plenty of hot water.
: Any help greatly appreciated.
Insulate the hot water heater and the piping that is exposed to weather and not enclosed in an insulated wall. When you are there, you use a little hot water every six hours or so, and recirculate it. When you aren't there, you have no recirculation, and the heat is lost through the piping, but not recirculated inside the tank enough to tell the thermostat to re-heat.
