Ralph, The p-trap may catch the earrings, but don't count on it. She may have been turning the nut the wrong way. Or the threads could have locked up either because of pipe dope on the threads, or glue. Solutions may involve cutting the p-trap off and regluing another adapter for the trap. There are several ways these have been installed over the years. Hard to guess at it without getting a visual. Terry
