: You cannot use plastic for gas piping above the ground, and if you are referring to PVC then you cannot use it underground either. The only material a do-it-yourselfer can use is steel.
: : can you use plastic for gas to a dryer or does it it have to be steel?
There IS a realtively new flexible stainless steel pipe available for gas installations, and I believe it meets code in most areas. the do-it-yourselfer might have some problems installing the terminations (end connectors), but the distributor might be able to help you out. It is more expensive than black pipe, and black pipe is really quite easy to work with!! Just make sure you use the YELLOW Teflon thread tape, don't overtighten and don't forget sediment traps & shutoff valves.
