If the sand is that much of a problem, I would think that it will also cause problems inside the house. Your best option would be a whole house filter, but get one that looks like a water softener tank. These can be programmed to flush out the sand every day or as needed, so you do not have to constantly change cartridges or use a screen so fine that it either affects the pressure or plugs up so fast that it reduces the volume and pressure.
: I have a submersible pump at 28' and would like to screen out the fine "sugar" sand which is tearing up my sprinkler heads. I've looked at "Y" strainers, but am not sure if the standard 20 mesh screen will be adequate. A large whole-house filter would work but would probably require very frequent and expensive cartridge replacement. What mesh or micron size should I be looking for if I use a strainer?
