Default Bathroom vent fan discharge options

The 1/2 bath needs a vent fan. Any thoughts on directing the outlet sheetmetal into the basement? I can go into the attic, but hate the thought of creating a path for the cold (Buffalo, NY is 20 degrees today) to drop into the bath.

It should go outside, either horizontally or vertically. Get a good damper for it if it doesn't come with one and use insulated vent pipeing if it is in unheated area. Don't vent it into the attic, either - the moisture will condense and mess with the insulation.
