100' well with submersable 3/4 horse pump, Well produces 20 gal/min...Air in lines amount varies, The blast of air is worse when pump first turns on, I hear it as it travels thru the pressure tank & hot water tank. They are right next to each other in the garage. Pressure is always good. The house is 20 years old, The hot water tank and the pressure tank were original and I wanted to change anyway so I did. Flotec 200 gal pre-charged, did not change settings on pressure switch. Pump comes on, fills tank and pressureizes and shuts off. We have iron in our water and the galvanized stand pipe was pretty coroded and rusty colored so I changed it to PVC, while the pump was out I decided to change it too. $$$$ adding up Control box was really noisey anyway. Just so ya know when the we (plumber friend helped) had the cap off the well we pulled the line a part and ran well and had no air out of stand pipe and volume was fine? But... I still have air in the lines, and getting worse. If there was a leak somewhere wouldn't the pump occationally come on?? Pretty frustrating and the wife is giving me that look like you should have called a plumber experianced with wells at the beginning. Happy I have a new pump and shiny tanks but she wants it fixed. Sorry for the long winded explination, any help would be much appreciated. I am not a plumber by any means but I can handle most challenges with a little direction John V Marysville WA

Did you install a check valve at the tank?

What kind of plastic pipe did you use to reinstall the new pump?

I did not change anything besides the tank at the connection point from well supply line, the the cut off switch, pressure relief are the same, here is the order supply line feeds T with pressure switch, gauge b4 it hits filter and heads to the house there is a check valve did not change. Real quick what promped this adventure about a month ago was air blasts stirring up crap off the pipes. Not that bad though (the air) now water is clean decent pressure, lots of hot water, but just big blasts of air making this usually handy man embarressed in front of the wife, it's driving me crazy!:) Thank you for the quick response

oops sch 80 1.5 inch pipe with check valves, the guy that helped me his Dad does wells and he helps him sometimes so the was some professional action on the stand pipe, pump and control box. We did not adjust the pressure switch yhough seemed to be working fine??

Real quick I went in the garage, no kids this morning gone with Mom so I actually could listen with out distractions. After the manifold (or what I called the T) it goes check valve then a cheap GE whole house filter then it goes on to feed the house. If I put my ear on top of the whole house filter I hear a dripping/slash syphon sound. I can also hear a similar sound from the hot water tank?? Could the check valve be bad?? Or maybe something with that filter?? JV

If you take that check valve out of line in the house, you might find the leak you have in your pipe between the pump and the tank.

Good News!

I changed the filter yesterday and it's better! NO AIR whoooo hoooo! With power off to the pump and b4 I turned back on, the house was pulling water from well side into the filter. When I turned the filter to off position it stopped, looks like the check valve between the filter and the tank/switch/gauge/pressure relief is not working... I will change when I feel like plumbing again. Thank you for the advice about the vortex, so it is possible to suck air and not have a leak. The old filter somewhere in the mechanism for filter/off/bypass was letting in the air? Because of the vacume/syphon from the house. Must be a natural syphon for whatever reason.
What is the main purpose of the pressure tank? Is it more air cushion to pressurize the system or store water? The reason I ask is the tank does not have much water in it?? I push on it and it is pretty light.... I think I will call a plumber to set the switch for proper pump cut off. I want to make sure that it's right. There is a bit of a thud when the pump stops, seems abit extreme to me. Did that before with the old pump and tank also. I feel like abit of an idiot but at least my water system is good for another 20 years. I used to complain about my water bill in town, now I'll be putting money in the bank monthly for the next hick up, to pay a real plumber! :-) You guys are a great help, the forum monitors, thank you!

NO air the only thing it could...

have been was the filters ON/off/filter postion switch..sorry it does not make sense...the airs gone that's the bottom line. Thanks anyway, help people with issues. I'll figure out the pressure tank can't be that tough.
