is there as easy way tell if the washer that needs to replaced was a beveled or flat?

the washer is missing

All faucets are designed to use flat washers. Bevel washers are used mainly for faucet seats that are damaged or wore beyond stem travel, therefore the thicker washer makes up the difference.

The bevel attempts to seal the water flow from the interior opening of the seat, rather than the flat raised edges of the seat.

Are you saying that some seats just cannot be removed by any means and that using a beveled washer could save you from having to replace the entire shower manifold?
