Please help,

I am pretty handy and have done this plenty of times, but as I have found in the past, there is always a problem... I am installing a new sink in my friends 1/2 bathroom. When I took the old (very old) sink out I noticed the threads on the 1 1/2" nipple coming from the wall were rusted and cracked. I thought the easiest fix was to buy a rubber Quick Plumb 1 1/2 '' to 1 1/4'' to hook to the old nipple and to the new plastic 1 1/4' trap. Since then I have been to the home improvement twice with different opinions on how to do the job. It seems that I am having so many problems with the 1 1/4" side of the plumbing. Is the plastic trap a bad idea? Should I go with a PVC trap and do they sell a PVC 1 1/4" that can be connected to the plastic 1 1/4" sink pipe (tailpiece)??

Thanks for the help.
