I have been seriously considering putting a recirculation system to speed-up getting hot water back to my shower. Now I have run into an article (http://www.homeressources.com/forum/read.php?f=9&i=2064&t=2064) that implies that using a recirculation system is counter-productive. Which is it, good or bad? Does the thermal-sensitive valve work, or not?? What are the professional opinions, and the people who have used them?

It would seem to me if they were that bad, there would be an out-cry in the forums, or on personal web pages.

Terry, what is it? A good thing or something to stay away from?

Thanks, Howard

They use energy - to run the pump and as a radiation loss from the pipes. They save on water use (and therefore sewer costs). They are convienient. They cause your heater to cycle more. Properly installed, they work. They usually insert a little hot water in your cold water line if you don't have a dedicated return line. Depending on how your piping is layed out, you may need more than one to do the desired job.

they spoil your wife....

they use much more energy,

they wear out the heaters much, much quicker

over time they wear out the pipes with water constantly flowing
through them.....

and they spoil your wife thinking she can
have the world laid at her feet by you....

next thing you know its something else....

We sell a ton of them, our customers LOVE them. We use all the different brands. People who buy them aren't typically interested in saving energy. It's a convienence thing. Those who are wanting to save energy and water typically go with the Metlund system.

Of course, the best method is to install a regular recirc with a dedicated return line, but that isnt always possible.

Another Question

I understand the potential for over hot-water heater usage, and usage of the pipes. However, if utilize my own timer that I can program only when the need is there (i.e., an hour in the morning and maybe an hour at night) would the water heater and pipes usage really be an issue? I do not want to seem to be "justifying" my plans, but do want to look at them realistically and have all the facts.

I appreciate your response. Thanks.

Howard
